Ground-breaking ceremony at McAirlaid's

Production at McAirlaid's starts in September Selm.

The first selmers are already working at McAirlaid's: the manufacturer of nonwovens used worldwide to absorb liquids. The first sod was turned on Thursday. When do the construction works start and what significance does the Selm site have? The fact that it rains on this Thursday morning does not slow down the good mood on the property between Werner Strasse and Steiger Strasse. The prospect that McAirlaid's production will start in September and that there are already plans for expansion has made the participants of the ceremony smile sunny under their umbrellas at the ground-breaking ceremony. We have compiled the most important information - what does McAirlaid's actually produce? Airlaids is the English term for cellulose fleece. Whether in meat, fruit or vegetable packages in supermarkets or on hospital beds: absorbent nonwovens are used almost everywhere in everyday life, as Andreas Schmidt, one of the two McAirlaid's managing directors, says. Together with Alexander Maksimow, he developed a fleece around 20 years ago that is now sold worldwide. According to Maksimow, the company is the second largest airlaid manufacturer in the world. "And we are always developing new products," says Maksimow.

McAirlaid's has factories in Steinfurt, Berlingerode, Heiligenstadt and in Virginia in the USA, where construction is also in full swing. What role will the Selmer plant play?
According to Managing Director Maksimow, the central processing plant for the Airlaids produced elsewhere is being built on Steigerstrasse. When will the actual construction work begin? Maksimow hopes that this will be the case in two weeks' time. So far, excavators have pushed the earth away from the arable land. Now the foundation has to be laid. The hall has the proud dimensions of 50 by 100 metres and is thus larger than a football field. An administrative area will also be set up in front of it. Is the timetable even manageable? "It's sporty," says architect Dominik Ehbrecht from Duderstadt, "but doable. Currently, 90 columns are being cast for the hall. They would be erected at the beginning of May and then the steel trusses with a span of 25 metres would be hung in place. The sides of the hall would be clad with façade panels. "We will start installing the production machines in mid-August," adds Managing Director Schmidt. Because in September the production has to be running - just to be able to process the quantity of orders - are there any other plans yet? After the start-up phase with 50 employees, the plant will soon have 20 employees in administration and around 100 in production. According to Andreas Schmidt, the prerequisites for an expansion of the Selmer plant to the east have already been created.
